Drunken Angel (醉いどれ天使)
The first Kurosawa film to feature Toshiro Mifune. The slums of postwar Tokyo provide the setting for the conflict between an alcoholic doctor – the “drunken angel” of the title – and the arrogant, reckless gangster dying of tuberculosis whom he tries to save. Mifune’s first great role in a “film in the Dostoyevsky manner.” Firmly established Kurosawa as one of the great postwar directors.
